The Psychotropic Drug Interaction Panel identifies five different types of people and the way they metabolize specific drugs. They are:

  • Poor Metabolizers (PM)
  • Intermediate Metabolizers (IM)
  • Rapid Metabolizers (RM)
  • Ultra Rapid Metabolizers (URM)

Different genes regulate how fast or slow various drugs are metabolized. Some people metabolize certain types of drugs very quickly and some people very slowly, which can cause problems with side effects and toxicity. The most common genes affecting drug metabolism are called Cytochrome P450 (CYP450). This group includes genes that code for an important liver enzyme that is active in the metabolism of toxins, metabolic intermediates, lipids, sterols and xenobiotic substances such as drugs. These enzymes account for 75% of the processes involved in the metabolism and the bioactivation of all drugs.
