While it is important to try to get as many of your needed vitamins and minerals from diet and sunshine as possible, it sometimes isn’t possible. For example, if you live in an area that gets few days without cloud cover, you will likely be deficient in vitamin D. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is believed to be 41.6% in adults in the U.S.. They can even be critical in some cases, like in the case of folic acid for pregnant women to significantly reduce the chance of birth defects.
So if you are feeling fatigued, stressed, or would like to improve the immunity system, talk to your doctor about supplements. Bear in mind though, even though supplements are not regulated the same way pharmaceuticals are, that does not mean they bear no risk. You should still talk to your doctor before you take any supplements, as there is a risk of overdose still, and supplements can interfere with some medications. For example, vitamin K can interfere with blood thinners. Like in anything in health and life, there are always benefits and risks.
But as long as you consult with your doctor and follow recommended dosage, supplements can be a great way improve the quality of life at relatively low risk and cost.
