The lining of the gut is supposed to have some porosity, but in leaky gut there is too much, and contents are able to get into the surrounding tissues. This results in altered gut flora and inflammation. This is a large aspect of many chronic digestive issues, such as celiac disease, Chrohn’s disease and IBS. The American diet doesn’t help, being low in fiber and high in bad sugars and fats. This aggrevates inflammation. You may also hear that digestive issues may make many other conditions worse; anything from asthma to depression. These need much more study though. That doesn’t mean leaky gut shouldn’t be taken seriously.
While there is not sure way to “cure” these issues, but an improved diet that is lower in fried and overly sugary foods certainly will help.
