Alzheimer’s is a specific cause of dementia and is a disease that destroys memories, and then basic functions of the brain. While dementia simply describes the loss of memory, reasoning and/or other thinking skills, Alzheimer’s is a specific form that isn’t completely understood as to what causes it.
We do understand some of the mechanisms in the brain as to what is damaging the neurons. There are two abnormal formations that develop in the brain: amyloid plaques, and tangles of a protein called tau. While most people develop some of these, these plaques and tangles develop much more frequently and in a more predictable pattern.
It is important to note that this disease is under much research and not much is known. There mostly exists just supportive therapies. To learn more, visit the Alzheimer’s Association.
